Absolutely my favorite of the Maisie Dobbs series. A gripping story full of insight into what it was like for the average British citizen during the war. Insights into the way newscasting was being stifled by different parties, including Americans like Ambassador Kennedy who was a member of the Isolationists in the US. while feathering his own economic nest.
I learned so many things during this book. I can highly recommend it to others. The writing is tight and for us audiobook folks, the narrator is extremely good in handling a wide variety of accents in a very realistic way..

Maisie is asked to investigate the murder of an American journalist during the London Blitz in 1940. She’s to be accompanied by Mark Scott, an American agent who previously saved her life in Munich. As Maisie digs into what led to the death of the fiery and ambitious journalist, she juggles personal issues like getting ready to adopt a young girl and dealing with her friend Priscilla and family’s war injuries. As always, Maisie’s character is thoughtfully written and reflects the ups and downs of a “modern” woman for the times without much sugarcoating. Not only are the plots and characters vivid and interesting in this series, the historical backdrops are informative.

Posting a review of the whole series:
What a delightful series. Not what I was expecting when I started reading. I started by thinking, "I'll read a couple, then ditch it," as a couple people had recommended it to me, but then I couldn't stop. I binged this series HARD. I think it took me about a month.
So the only way I can describe this book is "Lady detective historical look at Britain Post WWI into WWI," which sounds kind of boring on the surface. I only picked it up because 2 people had recommended it to me in the same month, (which means I have to read it, it must be a sign...) This book is anything but boring. It's an intimate look into the lives of fictional characters, exploring the inequities of social and racial divides without being heavy handed. Gentle is a word I'd use to describe this book, but don't let that deter you. This book had me crying at times, and I'm sorely disappointed that I can't read the next book yet. Hard to describe this book so you can get an idea of how it feels without reading the first book.
