Can't get over how gorgeous these are. My only complaint is that there are a lot of characters and the plot is very complicated...I have to reread sections to get a grasp on it. But...sigh. So worth it. Excited for volume three!

Summer 2019;

(3.5)

Picked up to read between having read the first volume, forgotten about the series for a while, and seeing the 3rd volume is in the nominees for the 2019 Hugo Nominees. I still want to give this series four hundred stars just for the art (and it is part of why even with a 3.5 I went up rather than down). It's just so gorgeous. I have a very judgey aesthetic need where it comes to art, and 90% of the time comics will never reach it (and even a perfect story I will dock a star from for that, because this is a visual media as well as a written one).

I still find myself deeply entrenched, entranced, and in a swirl of questions about the goings on in this story. I am in love with the flashbacks between our main character and her mother, as we tease out through her point-of-view exactly what it is she never knew and what she's uncertain of still, and between it all the true path of what her mother's choices and complicated/conflicted loyalties, choices, and reasons were.

I'm never quite all that interested in the blood-demon side of stories like this, so this I was surprised when it became questioning and confused about its own self, about the way it remembered things, and what had truly happened in the past that it had forgotten. I still would very much like to know where this series is going and how long it might take to get there, and I pray to god no other artist ever switches in.

Also, Kippa may still potentially be my favorite character of this series. Innocent, sentimental children whose loyalty and love unstrips their size, age, and power ability just sink their teeth into my heart and refuse to come out.

The artwork continues to blow me away, but no matter how beautiful the art is it cannot make up for how messy/confusing the plot is.

I must be missing something because I thought Volume 2 would answer some of the questions I had after reading Volume 1, however I still have NO IDEA what is going on and feel even more confused/lost. I'm still deciding if I will read Volume 3, on one hand the artwork is is BEST I've ever seen but at the same time I don't want to continue if the story doesn't make sense to me. *sighs*

Second read: 4.5 ⭐
First read: 4.5 ⭐
This series is one of my favourite series of all time already.
I sm blown away by the creativity that went into these books, the art style is so beautiful and dark and ugh! I just love it so much.
The world building. Honestly so amazing and like nothing I've seen/read before. Describing it would take too long and since I read these books in german I don't know the translated names for the races etc. The backstory of the world was further explained in this volume and it was just amazing. I can't wait to read/learn more about the ancient gods and monsters.
Have I mentioned the amazing diversity? No? Multiple queer (side-) characters (and nobody gets shit for it, it's universally accepted), people of different skin colors (especially in this volume) and amazing strong female characters.
And the main character is not involved in any love story what so ever!!!
I just live for this series.

4.5 stars, rounded up

Hot DAMN. This is the kind of content I love to see! I am so excited to keep reading this gorgeous, horrific little story.

I am going to need to see some consequences soon, though. I love her, but home girl needs to get her shit rocked for this story to continue being interesting.

I once again adore the art in this series. Each page should be framed and put on a wall. Well... some of the pages are a little gory for that, but still everything is amazingly drawn. Following Maika as she tries to find answers to the million questions to her past and what is inside her is always a great journey to follow. Once one question is ansered 20 more pop up, and I love it. I'm intrigued by everything and just want to know. These volumes love to end the last couple pages in a way that has you raring to pick up the next volume. Thankfully I already own the 3rd volume and am ready to get started to see answers and learn more questions we should be asking.
