I found this book to be very stimulating. While it focuses on paths and places it’s really more about how these paths interact with life. Political life, social life, personal life and even military life and religious life. The continuous and profound engagement with the poetry of Edward Thomas add a more mournful and introspective reflection on the impact of landscape to one’s life and death.
Moreover, the recurrent motifs of mysticism and spirituality highlight the majesty of the landscape, but the author does not shy away from nature’s violence also. In this way nature is constructed as a magisterial but also deeply ancient and profoundly primordial entity.
I would highly suggest this book - but it is not a quick read.
