It was good, but definitely way heavier than what I was anticipating. It felt depressing at times, but the writing itself was great and I especially loved how culture was at the forefront.

An emotional detailing of the failures and struggles of the American Dream: immigration issues such as racism, poverty, and missing relatives' deaths back home; generational trauma haunting you; coming to a land of promise only to see its ugly underbelly, with broken and cruel systems. It tackled a lot of topics but in an incredibly realistic and sympathetic way. Every book like this I read pushes me father left.

The ending was so touching and made me think of
Spoilera quote: "little children, love one another," which I thought was from Little Women but is apparently from the bible lol
.

SpoilerI recently read a book with a sort of similar character dynamic (kinda enemies to lovers, the guy wants to be a writer but gets in his own way, the guy has a mental health issue). Anyway, that one was a lot more lighthearted and, for me, a lot less impactful. I mean, this novel was one tragedy after the next! But I don't think it was gratuitous. I especially appreciate Misbah's throughline. It really makes the story bigger than a romance - it's about family, both blood and found.

when i started this book, i wasn’t sure it would live up to its name, but it absolutely did. the writing is at turns lyrical and beautiful and at other times blunt and unyielding in its descriptions. i look that there were no perfect characters in this story, but plenty of people that try, fail sometimes, but grow and try to do better. a great read on forgiveness, compassion, and finding strength in yourself and others.
