This book touches on so many things and does them all spectacularly. Life, love, loss, coming of age, trauma, bad choices, addiction, poverty, immigration, healing, faith, friendship, trust, hope, and forgiveness all wrapped in the harsh setting of a small town in the Southern California desert where two Pakistani teens try to find their place in an America Dream that wasn't made for them. The narration switching between Noor, Salahudin, and Misbah was a brilliant writing choice. Each character has such a clear voice and it makes you feel so much more deeply for each of them and their struggles. I loved how mature this YA book was and the way it never downplayed the harm that characters caused even when they were characters you had grown to love and root for. It gave so much weight and realism to the angst and emotions, and much more meaning to the ending and the story's messages of hope and redemption.

Oof. This story made me fall in love with Noor, Salahudin and Misbah and I adored their mutual relationships. Juniper - and especially its motel and liquor store - came alive as well, feeling like I was there among them. Tahir has a magnificent way of taking you along and giving you the time to figure out what’s happening so that once she tells you it’s just the last push to breaking your heart. Will be thinking about this for a while.

📖This YA fiction book managed to touch on nearly every deep and gut wrenching topic in just a few pages. I was amazed at the story, the characters, the heartbreaking plot, the exploration of grief and substance abuse. This book really showcases the arduous journey coming to America as immigrants and figuring out how to make it another day.

The beautifully written story alternates between Sal, Noor, and Misbah, with Misbah’s POV in the past. Sal and Noor have been best friends since age 6 when they found company with each other in the midst of a racist school, both children of Pakistani immigrants. Both Sal and Noor have big moments that test their friendship, and trials that seem too much for 17 year olds to bear alone. This book gave me goosebumps at the ending, which was beautiful. ✨🫶🏼

This was a buddy read with my friend Sarah and it really is the perfect book for a book club or buddy read discussion. 💕There are so many deep topics that warrant thoughtful discourse.

⚠️TW: substance abuse, xenophobia, racism, domestic abuse, emotional abuse, death of parent, trauma

lots of quick, short chapters and engaging on audio. the writing is beautifully done and i enjoyed the rotating perspectives. story itself was pretty heartbreaking and the characters run into just about any challenge they possibly could’ve.

maybe i would’ve bumped it up a little higher had i read the ebook instead of listening on audio. i did find myself pausing what i was doing sometimes to just listen, which doesn’t happen to me much.
