It's rough trying to write a review of a book when the tears are still coming strong. I've never read a book that understands religion in the exact same way I do. I feel like this book saw my soul. I've been trying to articulate it my whole life, and it turns out a woman I've never met, who was born in a country I will probably never visit, knows the things I do. This book is human on a level I didn't know a book could be. I've been wandering through life with the thought that this story might exist, and it is a joy to have found it.

when i started this book, i wasn’t sure it would live up to its name, but it absolutely did. the writing is at turns lyrical and beautiful and at other times blunt and unyielding in its descriptions. i look that there were no perfect characters in this story, but plenty of people that try, fail sometimes, but grow and try to do better. a great read on forgiveness, compassion, and finding strength in yourself and others.

This book is pure raw rage. It made it a difficult read but a very powerful one. I don't know how to pen down my thoughts for this one.

Why must the whites think they are better than the people of colour?
Who gives them the right to bully?
How can you so boldly shout at someone telling them to go back where you came from?
How can one be so cruel to physically hurt someone for years and not feel a remorse of guilt?
How can a parent ignore their child and then claim they love them?
How come God allows 2 people to go through so much troubles and take away the one person who could make it better?

But also at the same time Noor and Sal didn't lose themselves to rage and hate. They still had their faith, believed in themselves and when they couldn't believe in themselves they believed in each other and had hope. They fought but came back to each other. If there were ever two people meant for each other, it's Noor and Salahudin.

While the book was a bit slow to start for me, I am glad I kept going. It is an extremely heartfelt story about loss and hardship but also about love and family. Beautiful writing. Wish I could stay with the characters and read more
