SERIES REVIEW

Update 12/28/20
Manga Status: Completed
My Reading Status: Dropped
Read Overall: 6 Volumes
Genre: Shojo
Current Overall Series Rating: 3.25

Thoughts: This may be unfair for me to say as I dropped this, but this series should have ended at volume 3. That's just my personal opinion. I think this series just kinda drags after our heroine finally gets her wish completed early on. Knock yourself out if you want more fluffy rom-com, but for me I had enough after those initial volumes.

Last year, at Animecon, I bought 3 of the 3-in-1 volumes, but I never got round to reading them. Until last night that is, I wanted something that wasn't too much for my head to take in, something light and easy, and I settled on this one. I had time to read one of them (after that I was too tired), and I am hoping to read the other 2 today.
It was a fun, hilarious manga, though I do worry about the girl. She seems to have absolutely NO fashion-sense (who walks outside in a dress meant for a party and adds some sort of transparent shawl to the mix?), she just stands stock-still when going out. But we also see another side to her, and I really liked her. Though I hope Yoh is able to help out this girl and give her some common sense. :P Fumi x Haruna? Oh yes, definitely ship it, though ultimately I am hoping Yoh and Haruna get together (the CHEMISTRY!!!).

In middle school, Haruna Nagashima was only interested in softball.

Her team did pretty well, too—they made it to nationals. She enjoyed it a lot and had fun developing those athletic abilities.

Now that Haruna is in high school, she’s looking to get herself a boyfriend!

Convinced it will be as easy to do as it looks in manga and magazines, she finds herself at a loss when one of the tips or tricks she’s embodied work. After talking to some friends, she believes she’s in need of a coach—just like she had for softball!

Haruna recruits handsome but aloof upperclassman Yoh Komiyama to be that coach — much to his chagrin.

He only agrees to it on one condition—Haruna better not fall for him.

This is simply delightful!

I’ll be honest—I love these quintessential shoujo series. There’s such an agreeable mix of melodrama and truly thoughtful commentary. Though there are some contrived circumstances, there’s such heart at the center of this story that beats throughout.

Haruna is such a strong, central character who has agency and dignity of character in ways that are (unfortunately) often rare these days. She’s such an enjoyable, magnetic presence on the pate and I just want to read more about her and her story.

This is such a great choice for readers interested in a classic high school, slice-of-life series~

In the first volume, Haruana is starting high school and wants to leave behind her tomboy image because she really wants a boyfriend. First, she needs to get boys to notice her. She tries to find information from magazines to see what she needs to do so this will happen. With the help of a friend, she realizes she needs to find someone that will coach her. She finds this in Yoh, but Yoh tells her he doesn't want to help. Haruna eventually convinces Yoh to help as long as she doesn't fall for him. Will Haruna be able to get a guy to notice her and not fall for her coach?

I haven't read much manga, but I really enjoyed this one. There were some moments that definitely got me laughing. I would definitely recommend this series.

Okay, I'm going on a spree reading as much manga as I can find, which means I am reading and re-reading older ones because new Shojo isn't releasing fast enough for me.

This was a cute start, can't wait to see what happens next.
