This is the beginning of a dark series about an arranged (forced) marriage of a young Queen who has held no power. Forced to spend a month with each of the twelve possible husbands... with them being free to do just about anything they want to her. This book isn't quite as dark as what we are lead to believe will happen in the future installments of the series, but it's got enough to give us a taste and to prepare us for the next book. The men are somewhat mysterious. We get a brief glance at them all, but Liam (the first of the twelve to have his turn with Novalee... the Queen) is the leading man in this book. He is powerful, yet isn't as sadistic as some of the other men appear to be. He's had a soft spot for Novalee from the first time he met her six years prior. So far, he is the only one whom Novalee has trust in. Novalee is basically helpless in her 'imprisonment' but has a sense of strength about her. She isn't dumb, but is innocent and naive about what is happening to her. While the series as whole is of a devious and disturbing subject matter, I feel this particular book just touches that. Yes, there are a couple scenes that might make you wince, but it's just the tip of the iceberg... if we go by what is said between the characters... we know to expect even more in the next book. I think it's safe to say this is intended for mature readers.

Not what I was expecting

I love Gemma James’ writing, it reels you in from beginning to end.

Liam has me swooning.
Novalee has a backbone.
I can’t get enough of the two of them and then that ending… aaaahhh I need to work tomorrow… but I can’t stop reading! Taurus here I come.
