I devoured this book in 3 days. So I'm going to say that it was fantastic. It was everything that I would want a space opera to be. The science was internally consistent, the story epic, and the characters memorable. It's a must read as far as I am concerned.

Interstellar! Great drama, wonderful characterization, surprise mysticism, political intrigue, violence and a full ladle of grit. More male-character focused than I'd seek out normally though I hear there will be more focus on female characters that do not exist as love interests for the men as the series progresses. What's happening with Venus!>? I must know more.

This was a hard book for me to get into. The dual perspective flipping each chapter was the largest hurdle, being too frequent for me to get comfortably seated in the mind of one of the protagonists until they finally made contact with one another. After that, I enjoyed the blend of action, horror, sci-fi, and future politics. My only annoyances were the horror elements came across more "cute" than sinister*, the pejorative and stigmatizing usage of "psychopath," and the final resolution was rather frustrating to the point I probably won't be continuing the series.**

Spoiler*The protomolecule came across as a childlike intelligence playing with macabre legos rather than something scary or sinister and its capabilities too advanced for me to feel much tension with it.
**I hated the mind-meld aspect of the conclusion and hoped it would never come up again, but glancing at the next installments, its still around.

This book is gripping and well-written. The only reason it's not a 5/5 for me is because it's a bit dark for my taste. Haven't decided if I'll continue the series or not.
