This was such a bittersweet love story. Roya and Bahman’s love for each other and their country is disrupted by the Iranian coup of 1953 and they both try to move on, but the longing still remains. They still managed to find love in other ways, but it would never be the love they could’ve had with each other. I liked the way the story started in the present, but spent the bulk of its time in the past before following the trail of time back to the present. I felt for the characters and how their stories ripple through time in multiple ways. This was a great summer read about love, longing, and loss.

I was MISLEAD!!

I heard about this book being a beautifully written historical fiction about love and loss set during a very politically tumultuous period in Iran's history.

All I got is a whiny character who is(in present timeline) living in america with her white husband and kids and grandkids (no, its not a spoiler)
This book was supposed to have a politically rich backdrop but ut turned out to be a just a love story about a one dimensional female character pinning for someone her whole life.
That is just something I would never have picked up .
It took me a lot of time to read such a short book.

If I really wanted to consume the kind of plot this book had, i'd watch the indian soap dramas my mother loves.

Characters felt flat/cartoonish/undeveloped, repetition seemed senseless, told more than showed
Marigolds chapter was the only well written one imo
Fakhri was the only interesting character.
