*** spoilers daqui pra frente ***

This is a great start to what I'm sure will be a fabulous series; I really started to care about the characters & felt sick whenever they were in danger. I also really liked the descriptions of the human world from the foxes's perspectives & loved the introduction into the world of Foxcraft. The writing was also really great & super engaging. This is a brilliant story for middle graders, teens & adults alike.

I was sent a copy of this book by the publisher in return for an honest review.

Content Warning: mild fight scenes between animals & descriptions of death.

Extended Review to follow.

After the disappointment that were Wolves of the beyond I was pleasently surprised by this book.

I loved the protagonist - Isla. She gets things done, she makes mistakes and she is naive - she is far away from Mary Sue that a lot of main characters for kids seem to be. The story was surprisingly dark and intense too- I don't usually like the books that are written from the POV of the main character but I really enjoyed this one. The first opening scene is really intense and it really sets up the tone for the story. Granted it's just her brother playfully chasing her but the way it's written you feel like you are running away from an enemy that is trying to hurt you. I also really, really liked the scene where Isla is captured by snatchers and put in a cage and she has to escape before she gets put down - that was really intense and it kept me on the edge even though I knew she was going to make it out alive, I just didn't know how.

The only things I didn't really like was the mentor refusing to explain things to pupil because someone above said so trope and then them being left behind trope - it felt rehashed somehow and it almost made me dislike Sifrin even though he seems like such an interesting character with dark and mysterious past.

The other thing that really annoyed me was the way Karka died- after they built her up as the villain through the entire book I expected a showdown between her and Isla, especially because Isla trained and learned al this magic or foxcraft by the end of the book but instead we get Karka and her skulk attacking Isla, she is overwhelmed, I was half expecting her to lose or something - but instead of having this epic showdown between the villain and the good guy we get... plot convenience. Isla rescued this huge wolf from the zoo towards the end of the book and he repays her by snapping Karka's neck- it felt underwhelming and I hope that the other villains aren't defeated like that. I also didn't like the way Tarr was handled- I kind of expected him to play a bigger role but he says that he knows Sifrin, he says some important things that make Isla distrust Sifrin, then he gets captured by snatchers and put down not long after. His story just felt unfinished.
