This book is oddly entertaining and beautiful. Snotgirl is a green-hair unreliable narrator icon lmao

*The written portion of this review is for Vol. 1: Green Hair Don't Care AND Vol. 2 : California Screaming.*

I absolutely ADORE the art style and coloring in this series! The character designs are distinct, the outfits are memorable, and the art reflects the cast's social media/blogging obsession beautifully. I particularly appreciate the fact that while many of the characters wear a wide variety of outfits, they still retain their own unique sense of style. I can't rave enough about the coloring done here! Love the combo of vibrant bubble gum and dreamy pastel colors on display. A wide range of colors are used throughout the first two volumes but a care was put into employing particular color palettes to reflect the mood of certain section. Shout out to Mickey Quinn for the amazing work!!

Unfortunately... I could not bring myself to care about any of the characters in the first two volumes. I was warned in advance that the main characters are incredibly flawed but I was unprepared for the extreme levels of vapidity and selfishness displayed by the vast majority of the characters. While there are small moments of character development, the associated moments of vulnerability, forgiveness and/or empathy fall flat. There's soo little self-reflection those moments feel random instead of feeling like the natural culmination of the the characters' experiences. Maybe it all pays off character-wise in later volumes but I don't have the patience to stick around and find out.

As far as the plot goes... I find it disjointed at best and confusing at worst. If I were more invested in the characters I could push through that confusion but unfortunately I just don't give a damn about anybody in the story. If it wasn't for the pretty art style and the popularity of Scott Pilgrim (Bryan O'Malley's previous comic book project) this wouldn't be getting nearly the amount of attention it's currently getting.

The art is really nice, but the story is too confusing at times.

I love an unreliable narrator! The characters aren’t super interesting to me, but I want to know what’s going on…a lot of the art is also pretty fanservicey, which isn’t my favorite.

Just a funny, weird, mysterious, funky joy to read. Characters are deeply frustrating, but like in a good way. Lovely to look at, the art is dope.
