Not her best work. I wanted to like and respect the characters, but the language was too flowery and the decisions were mostly terrible. Plus the post wedding sex scene left me disturbed and colored the entire rest of the book.

I picked this book up because I love historical romances and I’m a sucker for enemies to lover stories. Although I can’t say I had a terrible time reading this book, it wasn’t a good time for a lot of reasons.

First of all, this is a very weird enemies to lovers story, because at the start of the book the two characters fall madly in love immediately after seeing each other   . It’s an insta-love story more than enemies to lover. Yes, Lianna struggles a bit with her emotions but it’s kind of in a weird, annoying way? Because she also falls in love with Rand immediately it’s more like “Oh I love him but I shouldn’t have, he is my enemy, Oh but I love him so”, rather than emotions developing in a more complicated and natural way. It’s just unrealistic and annoying.

Talking about Lianna, she is oh my god so annoying. She has every motive to rebel against her uncle and everyone else but she does it in such an annoying and unhelpful way. Every decision she makes is objectively bad. She is not a smart character that is written to read like one. She doesn’t necessarily think when deciding to do so and make elaborate plans, she just goes against everything her uncle and the English says and does and tries to do everything the French says. It makes her so annoying and look so stupid. She doesn’t think elaborately to decide what’s best for her people and herself and act in that way, she just blindly acts which also hinders her own cause anyways. She can’t get anything done for the French cause because her actions doesn’t make sense and only puts her, her family and her people at danger. Rand on the other hand is the male Mary Sue, he is kinda boring. There isn’t really much to say about him I guess.

The biggest problem I had with this book was that it is way too long for its own good. I really didn’t enjoy the author’s writing style, it felt like everything got kept being dragged on for pages without any reason! Honestly I skipped and skimmed a good chunk of this book without losing anything of substance and that is saying something. I don’t think I’ll try reading the author’s other books.
