I am adoring this on audible!
The combination of the writing style and narration have me so enthralled that even though there are times where I have no idea where the story is going I am so enraptured in the experience that I'm happy to be along for the ride to see where it takes me.
I am feeling for the characters and experiencing their joy and pain and everything in between.
I got books 2 and 3 in the series before I even finished book 1 knowing that I would want to listen to them immediately.

This started very slow and then ratcheted up to 110 by the end. You're always in good hands with Jemisen.

I had no idea what was going on until pretty much the very end. And was very surprised. And I loved it.

Shut the front door. Walk through the house and shut all the dang windows and the back door. Brew a pot of coffee/tea and do nothing but read this book. I loved it times a million. The characters, magic system, story, story lines, the writing, the representation... EVERYTHING!!!! I can NOT recommend this enough. Jemisin writes a story in a world that is post apocalyptic, fantastical, and yet feels real. It feels like the state of our planet in hundreds/thousands of years. It feels probably. So that just added to my enjoyment of this. A match up of Fantasy and Sci-fi for the ages! I’m not a fantasy reader but this played in the realm of sci-fi which just made me enjoy it more. 5/5 I want everyone to read this book. (The audiobook is fire as well FYI!)

I am so disappointed. I just don’t think this book was for me. I understand the need for the 3 different timelines but the current timeline was so boring that when we realised they were all interlinked I was really annoyed. I also don’t understand the magic system at all, I kind of think being as it’s a series this would be developed later on but I won’t be reading the next book. I didn’t like any of the characters either. I can see why this is such a highly revered book and why people love it so much, it just wasn’t for me.

First line:
LET’S START WITH THE END of the world, why don’t we? Get it over with and move on to more interesting things.
