I really loved this epic fantasy packed full of earth-based powers, found family, inclusive character design, and tragedy. The 3-character style worked so well. This starts slow, as many epic fantasy do, and has such an interesting payoff as character stories come together.

This book rules and I can’t wait to re-read it. Throughout the book there’s passing observations that feel inconsequential and human, but no remark or reflection is accidental. Jemisin is a fantastic world builder and the ending snowballed so fast to a jaw dropping tease for the next book. All of her characters are also deeply emotionally intelligent. That’s not exactly realistic maybe for people in real life, but it makes for damn good fiction.

N. K. Jemisin had me on the edge of my seat from page one. There’s very little I can say that won’t give away major spoilers, so if you love anything fantasy, sci-fi, or dystopian I think this is a must read. The characters draw you in and twist at your heart immediately. There is action, betrayal, and a lot of heartache, but also the potential for so much more. I’m planning to immediately devour book 2!

what the fuck, like actually. There's genuinely so many different moving pieces to this book. I have so many questions, just like, wow. I fucking called it that all POVs were the same person, I knew it. Also Syenite pissed me off so much, like it was just one stupid move after the other.

I was very confused in the beginning, and I’d say I didn’t quite understand what was going on until about 75 percent of the way through the book, but by the end I was very invested. N.K. Jemisin is a genius

Some things:

I didn’tunderstand the use of the 2nd person until about 2/3rds thru the book, and then thought it was rlly clever.

Characters were complex and loveable.

I have a history degree. That this book focuses on history, how it is told, and who writes it was so good to read and exceptionally well-done. The lore was sooo fleshed out.

A hard one to read in a slump. The world building was complex so thank gd for the appendix.

Dark, but never unnecessarily so.

Except every modern dystopian piece of media i have consumed recently has had cannibalism in it and my tummy hurts.
