PERSONAL REVIEW: I liked this book, despite it's faults. I enjoyed the storyline. Although there were times when I though it was a bit obvious what was happening, I was still surprised when the 'reveal' happened. Not because I hadn't picked in advance what was going to happen and why...but because the timing and the fall out of the reveal were well planned and written. It's not a masterpiece of literature, but it achieved its aim of telling and interesting story in an entertaining way. I will read the next book...simply because I want to know what is going to happen next.

LIBRARIANS REVIEW: It's a good addition to a middle or high-school library. There's a little graphic violence, a few kissing scenes and a whole lot of 'thinking' and 'reasoning' going on as readers try to figure out what's happening in the school. There are wonderful opportunities for discussion and debate and it hints at great topics in education that teachers can pull out of the text to tie into many different subjects.

The only character I really connected to was the mc. The plot had me hooked, but the other characters didn't feel too real.

benson thinks he's escaping a miserable life in the foster care system when he applies for a scholarship at the maxfield academy. but when he arrives at the boarding school, it turns out to be an experiment for teens who won't be missed, and there's no way out. they're fed and sheltered, but losing in paintball means no food for days and detention is death. benson is determined to find a way out before he grows apathetic like the other students, but not all of the students are what they seem...

good, suspenseful stuff for fans of the hunger games & the maze runner. surprise, it ended on a cliff-hanger.

The only reason I'm giving this rating is because it took awhile for it to pick up, but once it finally did it was amazing!! SO suspenseful. The concept of this book is just terrifying!! I just wish the first 3/4 of the book was as good as the last 1/4.. Anyways, it was an exciting read & I'm nervous to see what happens next in the second book...
