This story of Cat and Reece was an ok one. It wasn’t amazing, and it wasn’t trash, it was just sort of in the middle and one that I will probably have to read a synopsis of at a later date to remind myself what it actually was about. I can’t see it as being memorable in my brain. Hopefully by typing out my thoughts I can cement some thoughts about it for later.

Cat used to be a lawyer, but gave up her job at the District Attorney’s office because she wasn’t satisfied with her work. She left after 5 years and became a journalist working on a daily opinion piece called Cat Does Crime. She also wrote a best seller book, and is going to write a second. She was Harvard educated, and came from a family of Harvard educated lawyers. Her father owns a law firm and employs 2 of 3 of her brothers. Her 3rd brother is down in Texas or something running a ranch. He was also going to be a lawyer, but dropped out of law school mid way through because he hated it so much.

Cat is living in an apartment that was her mom’s escape from her spouse, Cat’s dad, when he would abuse her. It was mom’s safe place, until an undiagnosed high blood pressure issue caused her death.

Cat has her routines, one of which is to go to the local coffee place and order the same thing basically every day. On one occasion, on her way into a court trial that she is reporting on, a rude man cuts in front of her in line, rudely pays for her drink (I know, how does one rudely pay for something? It happens! It also happened in The Kid with Bruce Willis), and then demands she meet him the next day same time same place. Cat, not one to ever be told what to do, scoffs at that and brushes it off. She gets to the courthouse just in time to see opening arguments, and **GASP** you’ll NEVER guess who is the lawyer up there!! Why, it is Mr. Asshat from the coffee house! *Shocked whispers from the audience*. Now, I know what you all are thinking, this kismet must be a coincidence only found in books, right?

And well, yeah… You’d be right. Cat sees him, he doesn’t see her. She sneaks out undetected.

The next day she almost successfully stands him up at the coffee shop, and gets there as he is leaving. He says she must be in love with him (in so many words), she says he is out of his damn mind, bla bla bla, they both storm off to the courthouse to spend another agonizing day in trial.

Ok, I’m sure most of you can pretty much guess kind of where this book goes from here. And you would be mostly right, up until about the halfway point. That’s where the problem lies. The pacing of this book is all off. When we arrive at the halfway point of this book, it feels like we have wrapped up the entire book. The author did kind of a horrible job at wrapping in the second plot she was trying to achieve. I think that had she intertwined the two better, there would have been better angst, less of an insta-love type relationship (we are talking hooking up to moving in together in like 3 days. *eye roll*)...

But it all could have been handled so much differently!! The second plot could have been more thoroughly introduced during the first plot, you wouldn’t have had that full-stop in the middle of the book, you would have a better over reaching arc, and you would keep your readers invested for the entire book.

I am going to read the second book, mostly because I have it… And also because I love the narrators.. And also, I am curious to see if the writing style improves. This totally wasn’t her first book, far from it, so I don’t actually have high hopes… Just curious.

Audio book review: I love Erin Mallon. Idk what it is about her voice, and I don’t hate her male voice like I do a lot of females who imitate males. I also absolutely love Joe Arden. They are a great pair, and together they always create a spectacular audiobook! So no matter what my opinion is on the book, their execution on it was flawless. Even though I love them, I am still critical of their work as performers. I think they were cast well for these parts, they sound age appropriate for their characters roles. They both have the same volume and speed, so I don’t have to mess with my buttons while listening. The editing of this book was done well. The recording for both parts was also done well, no issues with background noise etc. Overall, just a really well done audiobook.
