Although this book really didn't scare me much, it was one of the best written novel I think I've read this year. Creative methods of describing scenes and inner dialogue, as well as a slow burn that shadows you in unease and uncertainty until the very end. There isn't anything I could say that hasn't been said before on Stephen King's masterpiece, so I'll just leave it as this: This book will stay with me for a long time.

I first read this book in 1978. It scared the pants off me. 39 years later, it still scares the pants off me.

This is classic King. I reread this thing almost yearly. In my opinion, it's one of his best.

Thought the first 3 parts of the book were a little slow, but oh boy did the end intensify. I couldn't put the book down and had to finish the last 30% or so.

Stephens King's classic novel 'The Shining', is about a small family - Jack, Wendy and Danny Torrence who move to the Outlook Hotel over winter, as part of Jack's new job. The family is slightly broken prior to moving away and they use this opportunity to rekindle their family. Jack was an alcoholic in the past, which is something that his wife Wendy can never truly forget, especially after the traumatic events that this caused involving Danny. Their son Danny also seems to have strange paranormal experiences, and often talks to his imaginary friend Tony, who guides him further into this paranormal world. He discovers he has what is known as a 'shine', which allows him to understand and see other peoples thoughts; something which is not always the best for the family, especially when he reads the thoughts of his parents. The novel follows the family up to the mountains as they try to create a fresh starts and depicts their seemingly good change of lifestyle, to what turns into something unexpected.

I cant really put into words my exact thoughts on this book. To start off however, I would say that I can one hundred percent understand why this book is so popular and is considered a classic and a must read. All I can really say is it is WEIRD. After watching the film adaptation a year or so ago, I knew that I needed to read this, mainly because I wanted to compare the both and see how close the film was to the novel and to experience Kings novels for myself.

When reading, I could completely vision what King had written, which I think is extremely clever in itself, especially for a book with so much visual detail and also with deep descriptions of the paranormal world. If you enjoy reading physiological books and are looking for something very unique and strange, this is definitely the book for you.

Personally, I did enjoy the book, but I found myself struggling to pick it up and it took me a long time to get through. I think this must have been due to the fact that I don't typically read physiological/ horror novels; in fact this is probably my first, and so this was possibly why I found it hard to get my teeth into.

Sometimes I like reading a book after I've watched the film adaptation or series, as it enables me to vision it in a certain way, but I do think that slightly ruined my experience of reading this. I could not get the film out of my head, and I think due to the genre, it would've been better reading it before watching the film. Obviously being aware of the events and of course, the end, there was no real sense of surprise or shock which I do think someone who had read this with a fresh mind probably would experience. It also irritated me how Wendy has dark, black hair in the film, but in the book she is described as having blonde hair. This is obviously not down to King, but the film producers instead and I know this is such a minor detail, but I then found it hard to visualise Wendy in the way that she was being described.

Overall, I really did enjoy this book, but I would advise you to read it before you watch the film if you haven't done so already! This will allow you to truly capture the essence of Kings writing and to visualise it with your own mind.
