There was too much infant/child death, most on the page, for me to truly enjoy this book — those being usual hard lines I don't cross. For John Connolly, I was willing to make an exception.
Like this book's heroine, Ceres, I have sat beside my child's bedside in despair, knowing they were lost to me. I found this painful, terrible experience to be beautifully and empathetically rendered. Too, I appreciated how well Connolly wrote from Ceres' perspective. He is such a skilled writer, and it's a testament to his talent that I stayed and finished something I would have put down were it any other author. I loved the ending very much.
