I adored this book! The sapphic shapeshifting monster romance, portal travel, and plot twists kept me glued to the pages. Genre-wise, it's a nice mixture of sci-fi and urban fantasy monster romance. This read like a HFN standalone, but can also be continued in the next books of the series.

A sad case of right book, wrong time. I think I would have liked this a lot more if I was in the mood for a cozy fantasy romance. I will definitely be continuing in this series!

The cosmic horror was really good, I loved those weird moments and the descriptions of the Endless compared to earth. However, the romance was instant attraction and not much more.

Trillin felt very innocent, young and curious compared to Sian's overly sexual pov, which felt out of place in such a low heat book and considering that the monster at the receiving end is so new to even being a person. I mean the human just straight up just wants to fuck her from the very beginning and will not stop mentioning it.

Then, instead of seeing them get to know each other and fall in love, we get plot interrupting them at every turn. Whenever the relationship has a chance to develop properly we're hit with more plot, rinse and repeat, until suddenly the book is over.

Do they really know each other? Nope. Are they in love immediately? Apparently.

The pace was off, I relied mostly on Sian to make sense of things but she's so all over the place. It felt more like a strange prologue than a real story.

I will say though, Trillin's journey of self discovery has major 'freshly hatched trans woman' energy. I wish there had been more of a focus on that, like how did she know she was a girl? Her identity is a big theme of the book, but I would've loved a deeper look into it, especially if it had been discussed with the woman she loves.

That's where the issue lies, Sian learns about the Endless, about what Trillin used to be, but not about Trillin herself. She only guesses what being on earth must be like for Trillin, but never asks her, when there's so many opportunities to really understand and learn from each other.

Trillin goes through her emotions alone without really having the space to express herself and it's such a shame.

The ending felt especially disjointed and I'm not particularly interested in continuing the series.
