"It's dangerous not to care for the small things that need you."
Milly and Billy are struggling to keep their restaurant doors open, struggling with pleasing their overbearing mother, and overall just wondering why life doesn't seem to be going right. Told with flashbacks to their parents' time in Hong Kong before immigrating, The Night Eaters tackles diaspora, racism, and family values in a bloody little package.
I have never been happier I picked up a graphic novel with no idea what I was getting into. This was FANTASTIC. I love anything with horror and when I picked up the hardcover of this one day I knew I wanted to try something a little different. This entire piece is stunning, there is so much to look at in the art and pick apart in the way the art ties in with the script - this is just a really well done graphic novel.
I absolutely refuse to give anything away about this, but my jaw dropped multiple times. It's gory, with on page body mutilation and blood, but it all fits in a visceral and disgusting way. I'm so excited to read volume two when it comes out and I'm so happy to have a gorgeous hard copy (with undercover art!) on my graphic novel shelf.
Content warnings: Gore (HEAVY), Blood (heavy), Body horror (heavy), Racism (mild on page), Violence (mild), Vomit (couple scenes)

I love Liu/Takeda as a team so so much. This is on-par with Junji Ito with how unhinged it is, I can’t wait for book two. More explanation and story please!!!

This is one of the best graphic novels I’ve read. The art style is breathtaking and sets the perfect tone and the writing and character development is better than most novels I’ve read. Can’t wait for the next one!

This graphic novel was gorgeously, creepily illustrated and excellently, hilariously written. I loved all the witty remarks from the characters and especially the sibling banter between the two twins. The art style was very unique and stylized, and everything from the color palette to the line quality gave the story a sharpness and eerie feeling lurking beneath the recognizable and mundane city backdrop I can't wait for the rest of this trilogy to come out!

I also loved the way that the notoriously demanding and cold Asian parenting style of the mother was paralleled with the issue of a non-human demon eater not knowing how to raise kids as humans and not rub off her "badness" onto them.Graphic: Sexual harassment, Vomit, Sexual content, Self harm, Blood, Injury/Injury detail, Body horror, Cursing, Emotional abuse, Drug use, Gore, Pregnancy, Death, Fire/Fire injury, and Violence
