I usually love imaginative investigations into possible futures, but this felt like it rambled across too much information without delving into enough of both the world or the story, and this proved detrimental with helping me keep up with the mechanics of the ship and technology. At times it felt like the book was using trauma within the captain’s past without justification, and the break down of good and bad was a bit one dimensional, especially with ‘the cargo’ being the epitome of a bad person.
Spoilerand having him find some beauty in the ocean whilst on a bunch of drugs doesn’t really give his character any more depth

BUT the writing was lovely in terms of its description of the sea, and when aspects of the character’s world was described, it was done captivatingly.
