This was excellent. The landscape was tangible, the tension gripping, the people real. The horrors numerous and grounded in real life.

What an incredible read! I could not put this book down.
So many twists and turns as the story unfolds. I love that it’s set in the dry Australian outback and is a must read for any murder mystery / thriller lovers.
Off to the book shop to get Jane Harpers next book.

This is a story set in a drought in a rural Australian town where a double-murder/suicide has just happened. The cops, not being satisfied with that story start up an off-books investigation that unravels all of this small town’s secrets. I really liked the premise and all of the twists and turns, but the pacing was a little slow for me.

Good consistent plot- just would have liked more of actually the explanation of the murders.

This was a mystery that I could not put down, and I finished in one day. I was deeply invested in the main character, and the bits of the past that were intertwined with the present.
SpoilerI wasn't expecting who the killer was at all, and it really took me off guard! I did feel like there was a disconnect about Luke, I mean it was implied he was a manipulator/sociopath? and I feel like they built it up a little too much to be a red herring. Other than that great read!

This book/author came recommended by Adrienne Young as a great example of voice & timeline/POV jump “rule breaking” used effectively to paint a great mystery. Very much enjoyed this riveting tale with plentiful twists and suspicions thrown on several characters before the real criminals (past and present) are revealed.

Content warnings: parental abuse, gun violence, murder/death (including of a child), implied/perceived suicides
