Still going strong with the second book in the series. The FMC and MMC are more grumpy but still very likable and entertaining. Once again, a good mix of plot and erotic romance, albeit the last quarter kind of veers off the path a bit and it felt pretty jarring. If not for that weird detour that goes off the tracks, I would have given this 5 stars. The FMC is also actually one of the rare times I actually like the sassy, badass FMC archetype because she's more comical than angsty like many others.

I was not a big fan of Liz or Raahosh. Initially, I really sympathized for Liz, who was forced to adapt to life on a new planet after being abducted by aliens, and I respected her for implementing boundaries with Raahosh and strongly enforcing them. I ended up not liking her, though, as she treated her fellow humans rudely and with intense vitriol when it was undeserved. I did not like Raahosh from the get go for kidnapping Liz with the intention of finalizing their mating, especially when he knew how reluctant she was to accept him as her mate. Although we later learn why Raahosh made that decision and Liz forgives him, the explanation given and forgiveness from Liz did not do much to improve my opinion of him. I appreciate how much the sa-khui men protect and love their partners, and I know the call of a mate is immediately accepted by sa-khui people, but as a human in a new place with new customs, all Liz wanted was some semblance of a chance to make her own choices, to reciprocate Raahosh’s affection on her terms, and Raahosh took those options from her.

The first book was obviously bad but in a fun and ridiculous kind of way that made me want to return to the series for a quick head-empty read. But this one was just bad without much of the silly and redeeming aspects. There is HEAVY dub-con for at least half the book and the “happy ending” is essentially just Stockholm syndrome.

Also, quick rant about one part in particular I didn’t like:
when they introduced his family backstory I immediately thought the angle was going to be he and his mom and brother were abused and he was going to learn and grow and not repeat patterns. Like the story is literally that his mom hated his dad and did not want to be with him, was forced into multiple pregnancies, and then the family was taken hostage until raahosh returned severely scared with his mom and brother dead. That could not be more black and white an abusive relationship. But no. It’s used to justify his actions and give a reason for the law (which is a good one!) but then they circle back and basically justify his fathers too???? It’s just such an unnecessary addition to the book to give that as his backstory but show he learned nothing from it and that it’s fine he didn’t because his “punishment” is a dream life.

Her attitude in the beginning is exactly at the level it should have been.

I have mix feelings about Raahosh. On one hand, his heart is in the right place in terms of protecting his mate. On the other hand, I don’t like that he practically
forced Liz to accept the qwi (not sure of spelling as I listened to it) by putting it in her with her protest.
I like that Liz is strong-headed and keeps her ground, standing up for what she thinks is right. She’s bold and I just love her!! The patience they have for each other when
it comes to the bedroom and when Liz learns about what happened to Raahosh when he was younger
makes me blush. She throws slang over to him and him trying to understand what she is saying is both funny but understandably frustrating.

Not as good as the first one but good. Takes place right after book 1 with a new girl.
