Incredibly dark. Contained within eight pages of condensed and concentrated expressions, feelings, and passion, the stories are powerful. I had pictured a graphic Winesburg, Ohio, but the hidden stories here come from a context of grand-in-scale metropolis where anonymity is freeing to devastating consequences.

Not for the faint of heart, stories contain imagery and themes of abortion, adultery and rape. They are not throwaways or sensationalized but rather subtle and at times earnest. Great stuff.

L’efficacité de la narration en seulement 8 pages par histoire (majoritairement) est à se jeter par terre.

Tatsumi uses simple, uncluttered drawings to depict the gritty and quietly shocking lives of ordinary Japanese people. This book is a series of very short stories. The narratives are unembellished. The people are not admirable. They work in sewers, bars, train stations, factories. An atmosphere of something very human, private and bare is evoked through the stripped-back style of storytelling, which makes the unexpected moments of tragedy or perversion all the more provocative. Loneliness, silent desperation, distance in relationships and abortion are a few recurring themes. Altogether I found this a very eloquent but saddening piece of work.

Not my favorite collection of his but as always there are some fantastic ideas in here and some very entertaining stories. I also enjoy how in Tatsumi's stories — in his other collections as well — the main character rarely talks. He's mostly an unfortunate soul and all the ills of society are happening to him.
