Alice Feeney has done it again. This is the type of mystery/thriller that I've been needing recently. I am so sick of domestic thrillers where it's the same format - husband and wife look perfect, husband is actually sociopathic/narcissistic, she tries to leave him but he ends up dead OR he cheats on her and still ends up dead, etc. I've been desperate for a book that sucks me in and keeps me guessing, and then provides REALISTIC (as realistic as these sorts of books can be, lbr) answers. This book was so confusing at first, trying to figure out the characters and how they are interconnected, but oh my god, it was such a fun ride. I love that feeling of 'wtf is going on right now' when I first start a book, it just makes me want to read more and figure it all out faster. I ate this book! I love Feeney's writing where she leads the reader down one road and then that road twists into a completely different road, where everything you just thought to be true is actually false and she was just leading you astray. I've only read this book and one other from her (Rock, Paper, Scissors) and they've both been like a game of cat and mouse between her writing and the reader, if that makes sense. It just keeps the reader on the edge of the seat and it makes the experience so much more fun and entertaining. I was literally taking notes and making a family tree of the characters, trying to put it all together myself and I still couldn't figure it out šŸ˜‚

Tropes: mother/daughter relationships, short chapters, twists and turns, trust nobody, everyone is lying, lies lies and more lies, betrayals and revenge, unreliable narrators, unreliable characters

SYNOPSIS:
  • Twenty years ago, a baby was snatched right out of a stroller in a supermarket. In present day, someone is murdered in a nursing home. How are these related? Youā€™ll have to read to find out!
  • The four POVs + connected folks are:
    • Patience: an 18 year old working at a nursing home.
    • Edith: an elderly woman living at a nursing home.
    • Clio: a therapist.
    • Frankie: a prison librarian

MY THOUGHTS
  • This marks the 5th book Iā€™ve read by Feeney. I think thereā€™s only one I havenā€™t read yet of hers. I love her writing style. Her books flow nicely, and I typically get through them pretty quickly. I made it through this one in a day.
  • Feeney does a great job developing characters & is an expert at plotting a good thriller.
  • This kept my attention throughout, and I kept wanting to see how everything was connected. I enjoyed how little details are sprinkled throughout & everything starts coming together.
  • Although some aspects of the story are predictable, it didnā€™t take away the enjoyment for me.
  • The ending was okay. Not amazing, but not bad.
  • I am a sucker for complex family relationships, and thereā€™s a lot of those in this one.
  • There are multiple POVs & multiple timelines in this one.

TL;DR: āļøāļøāļøāļøhard to put down. interwoven POVs of 4 women & 2 crimes. finished in a day. ending wasnā€™t amazing, but enjoyed the book.

Good Bad Girl by Alice Feeney

āļøāļøāļøāļø (4/5)

Genre: Thriller

About 305 pages

Four women. Three suspects. Two murders. And one missing woman. Edith, Frankie, Clio, and Patience are all good bad girls. These women are connected by two things: a missing baby from 20 years ago and a woman murdered in a care home. Each wants to solve the murders and disappearance for their own selfish reasonsā€¦

I had to keep the summary brief for this one because otherwise, it would give too much away, but WOW. This book started a little slow but ended with a bang. I loved figuring out how each of the women was connected to one another and specifically loved Edith and Patienceā€™s characters. Every time I thought I knew where we were going, Feeney threw in another twist. I definitely got confused at times, so this is a book where you really need to put your thinking cap on while reading it, but I would highly recommend it!

Favorite Quote: ā€œTime can be borrowed, wasted, or stolen. Time can bend or break, it can hurt or heal. Time can rewrite history. But time is too precious to be taken.ā€

At first, I was having a hard time keeping the characters straight, but about halfway through, I finally figured out who everyone was, and was able to settle in and enjoy the story. I felt like this book was written by Lisa Jewell, rather than Alice Feeney, as it was more like a domestic drama/suspense than a thriller. And I would recommend this one to those who like that genre.
