Literally what the fuck.

This was an absolutely wild ride and I loved every minute of it. There was so many twists and turns and gorgeous writing with raw emotion, I tore through this in less than 24 hours. An absolutely perfect book for the cottage at the end of the summer. This book was a fascinating way to dive into the concepts of grief and death, while also exploring gender, misogyny, complicated social dynamics, and the simultaneous exploitation and disdain of young women and girls.

Outside of the story, the aesthetic design of this book was absolutely flawless. The cover is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen, and the honeycomb embossed endpapers are stunning. But I also loved the choices of the melting chapter titles (which matched the same warping of the title on the cover) as the book progresses and the story becomes more convoluted, as well as the multiplying flowers on the title page for each new part of the book. Even the margins on the edge of the page are small, which makes you just feel like something is slightly off while reading; I don’t know if this choice was deliberate but if it was, it was absolutely ingenious.

I will definitely be reading more from LaSala in the future!

I'm not generally one who reaches for YA often, and I'm often disappointed when I do... But The Honeys is just as strange and captivating as its cover. A slow burn that keeps you turning pages - deliciously weird, queer fun. I'll keep it short and sweet and say pick this one up for The Last Time I Lied x Bunny x Mexican Gothic vibes.

This was beyond my expectations. I picked it up for a kind of horror-lite bath-tub read to read in a day. This is not that! La Sala's writing is truly beautiful and transports you to the narrators world from the first bizarre and violent opening scene. Mars, the lead, is openly gender fluid and yet doesn't fit the cliche of meek and bullied "wuss." They stand up for themselves, are athletic and adventurous, and they have a bit of a sassy mouth. I loved Mars and was with them on every step of these creeping mystery. Some parts of it had me SHOOK and near gagging. Some real WTF moments. The true horror doesn't begin until closer to the end, but the mystery is enough to keep this page-turner moving!
