3 stars.

The vibes:
  • Novella
  • caretaking
  • Friends to lovers

My thoughts:
I will read Christmas anytime of the year- so when I saw this new release- I immediately added it to my list. As a novella- I thought it would be a great “in between” book.

I thought this was a cute short story. It felt like I was reading a few chapters in the middle of a full length novel. These characters are in the middle of their own journey and we just see a snapshot of it. We don’t get a build up or a development. We’re just thrown in the middle. With that said- I wish this was a full novel! Because I do think I’d enjoy these characters if I knew more about them and their backstories.

I didn’t realize that this novella is a companion book to Best Friends, Backups, and Something More. I haven’t read that book so I did feel a little bit lost on all the side characters and backstories. It felt like I should know who they were - so I do think you should read that for this novella to make more sense. This might be my fault though- not knowing I should read that book first.

Loved this sweet and quick read! It’s a modern take on Marianne and Colonel Brandon from Sense & Sensibility. We get Mila and Landon finally confronting their slow-burn that started in Best Friends, Backups & Something More (Mila’s brother’s love story). While her family gathers away from home for Christmas, Mila is stuck back, alone and sick. Landon is the perfect person to lovingly take care of her. This is a cute little story on its own, but it is definitely so much more with reading the previous book first. Much more of the Sense & Sensibility feel comes through with the whole picture of reading both stories. I like how the fingerprints of Austen’s original story are clearly there, but  it doesn’t adhere too closely, instead it perfectly fits the sweet modern narrative. I so much wanted to see more of Mila and Landon after the first book, so I was thrilled to read this short book. This story was adorable. This is a closed door story with no harsh language.

This is wonderful if you want to get in warm/cozy/sweet Christmas time read in a sitting. I loved coming back to enjoy some characters from Best friends, backups and more. They are both good companionship reads to each other. While a shorter read I didn't feel rushed or incomplete. Still great flow and satisfying end.
