Rufus wants a pet and not just any pet, a dog. The best pet in the world. But his dad says no and he's not budging. So his mom get him the next best thing, a guinea pig. Which is definitely not a dog or the the next best thing. If Rufus' dad thought a dog would be a bother, he hasn't met Fido the guinea dog. She may be tiny, but she can cause big trouble. Maybe she'll convince his dad to finally let him get a dog.

Funny and fast-paced, this is a great pet story for young readers.

Listened to this on a road trip with the whole family and we all really enjoyed it! Many laugh out loud moments and teaches good lessons. We thought it was especially funny because the dad and son in the story act a lot like the dad and son in our family.

Guinea Dog Collection, Books 1-3
Patrick Jennings

Spend 9 hours reading three childrens novels to have a 25 minute discussion with a student about his favorite books……? Worth it!

This is actually a pretty darn cute series. It is listed as grade 3 reading, but I have no clue how to properly judge if that’s legit or not.

As with any book, there are pros and cons. My least favorite characters were my student’s favorite characters - and vice versa!

Extremely funny kids chapter book - enjoyable for both kids and adults.

"'Copy that' was my new favorite way of saying 'okay,' replacing, 'Gotcha, chief,' which Dad recently made me stop saying."

'How'd your hamster die?' I asked.
'Natural causes.'
'Like lightning or something?'"

Cute cover that will appeal to kids. The story is kind of an odd blend of magical realism.

This is what I would call a middle grades fluff book. It would have high appeal for kids/young animal lovers but there wasn’t a lot of substance to it.

Anna recommended this to us.

5th-grader Rufus wants a dog, but his anal dad can't stand the idea. So, Mom gets him a guinea pig. Rufus is so disappointed, it takes him a long time to realize this isn't a normal guinea pig. It understands "sit" and "quiet" and "go get help" and even how to eject CD's...

Recommended juvenile book.

some extra bits:

1. The best character isn't Rufus, but his friend Murphie who comes late to school, is nearly failing 5th grade, and who everyone likes (including this reader). Not sure what that says.

2. Slight annoyance with yet another juvenile story where the main character supposedly loves books, but never takes a second to read them (or, in this case, say anything about them).

This was the first novel I read as a kid. It got me into reading. Absolutely loved it. It’s very goofy.
