I liked how the mystery was downplayed in favour of Hugo and Tommy’s developing relationship. I totally get why Hugo is afraid, and I like how the author took the time to let Hugo explore his feelings and fears rather than get over them easily for the sake of the plot, which is something that happens more often than it should. Despite being downplayed, I did like the mystery itself (it was not terribly hard to solve) and it how things turned out. Final note: I’m glad I did not read the synopsis for the third book before finishing this one.

A gentle update about Hugo and Tommy. Their relationship is the main focus of this book, with Hugo in particular developing a more stable approach to the relationship, and actually being able to be more physical with Tommy. He is still as nervous as a box of frogs, jittery and jumpy at any askance look at them.
The mystery of the disappearance of Helena was very much in the background, not really appearing until over 50% and even then being very much a low level sub plot.
Again, the writing style and dialogue setting the scene very nicely in post war Britain - loved the reference to Prince Charles being christened!
