The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice

Not nearly as good as the first volume, but satisfying since Rice reveals so much more of the vampire mythology she has created. Several new characters are introduced, the story travels the globe and spans thousands of years, and confirms what Louis and Claudia suspected: that Lestat knew much more than he was telling.

As good or better than [b:Interview with the Vampire|43763|Interview with the Vampire (The Vampire Chronicles, #1)|Anne Rice|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1380631642s/43763.jpg|873132]. Anne Rice really shines when she is writing historical fiction, and much of this novel takes place in the past, where she is at her best.

Actually rating this book is really hard because there’s so much nostalgia tied up in it. Was it as good as I thought it was when I was 14? Not really. Did I still enjoy it? Yes, I did.

So much better than "Interview" it's kind of amazing it's the same series. Lestat is just a way better character than Louis, who's too whiny to be cool. Lestat, on the other hand, never looks back really--even though he does, and that's what makes him awesome, but I'll get to that. This is the story of how Lestat became Lestat, and also how vampires came to be, and how they function in the world. There are as many ways to do this as there are vampires, and it turns out there are lots of those! Admittedly, the "rock star" portions of this are super lame, but they are blissfully short, so you can almost skip them. (He wears a cape, for God's sake--a cape!) I also find it kind of funny that Rice takes the anti-hero thing to such extremes. The Mother & the Father haven't moved or talked in centuries, but all of a sudden they're all about Lestat? Um...ok. I know it moves the story along, and I remember Queen of the Damned being freaking spectacular, so it's a conceit I'm ok with, but it's still awfully convenient. Either way, I'm looking forward to getting into number 3.
