ah yes!! i love to spread extremely dangerous misinformation about a horrible tragedy!! anyway, don't read this book, and stop teaching it in schools. there are so many other books that are accessible to school-age children that are way better suited for genuine education than this book. people don't know enough to understand that this is purely FICTIONAL and pushes really harmful stereotypes and ideas that german civilians were completely ignorant of what was going on when they DEFINITELY WERE. the diary of a young girl, once, hitler's canary... DOZENS of other books that people could be teaching about the holocaust with but they chose the work of fiction that propagates really dangerous fallacies. hate!

Absolutely devastating, but so brilliantly written. To come at this issue from a child's perspective, who lacks any understanding of the political situation happening around him, and being able to see his natural inclination against the violence of certain characters and his love and curiosity about other people is heart wrenchingly beautiful.

Big warning to parents, this might be an especially hard read for you. It had me absolutely weeping for the entire last chapter, but I have no children. Trust me when I say it will hit harder if you do.

A great quick read, really makes you think about how similar we are as people. The story of Bruno and Shmuel’s friendship is so innocent and beautiful, even though the events that take place certainly are not.

I may be cheating by saying I read this as I just had the audio book playing and I wasn’t super paying attention bc I knew what happened after watching the movie. BUT I loved the movie and cried like a baby. Maybe in the book I would have wanted to see more about the family’s reaction at the end.

I have since read reviews that this is an inaccurate portrayal and maybe problematic but I did not do my own research on this so my rating does not reflect that. Please be aware and maybe look into this before reading!

This book was a little bit overrated in my opinion. I was sad but i didnt bawl like i expected . I am going to read the ending again but what can i say this must have been difficult to write and i give the author credit for that :)
