I have no complaints about the writing style but I won't be recommending to friends as I don't think that this type of contemporary romance is for me. Doesn't mean it's not worth reading or not good, just not for me. Absolutely read the TW/CW. This is not a "dark romance", this is dark and a romance.

Still Beating is a dark romance with a lot of trigger warnings. But what I like about this book is how they conquered their trauma together in a non toxic way. I loved the story. How they survived the tragic event and still ends up together and to be happy. They totally deserve it. Such an amazing book.

I am giving this book 5 stars because the emotion that I felt from this story was so strong. This book is definitely not for the faint of heart. However, the message is so important and the story is just so good. It speaks a lot about trauma bonding and how to recover. Additionally, how others can misunderstand trauma that is experienced especially if they were not a witness to it.

  • Trigger warning of a lot of dark content such as rape, torture, suicidal thoughts, injury description

Jennifer Hartmann is such a beautiful writer. This book kept me hooked from page one. It was a bit hard to read through the earlier part of the book describing Cora and Drew’s experiences, but watching them to be able to flourish and recover after their shared trauma was really beautiful. I was on the edge of my seat waiting for them to get out of their situation. I’m so glad that Drew did the hard thing and left Cora to allow her to be the best version of herself. it felt a bit problematic that Dean falls in love with his financé’s sister, but I think it could happen to anyone given the situation they faced together and previous history of feelings.
