This was…abysmal. I liked the synopsis and thought it would be an easy, funny read. Turned out to be the complete opposite. I wish I’d stopped reading it but I just kept hoping it might get better. The dialogue made me cringe all throughout. Did the author really think that everyone speaks like that? Also, using the word pu**y as an insult to someone, even as a joke just lowered the tone of the book even more. I’m baffled how anyone could rate this five stars.

Mr Wrong Number: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice Level: 1.5 (steamy kisses, open door bedroom scenes, no details, innuendos)

Colin and Olivia have known each other for years, Colin is Olivia’s older brother’s best friend. When Olivia’s bad luck means that she doesn’t have a job or a place to live anymore, she moves in with her brother, who happens to be roommates with Colin. The more time they spend together, the more they realize the other isn’t as annoying as they originally thought. But when misunderstandings occur Olivia has to decide how well she really knows Colin.

I started out really enjoying this book, the back and forth between Colin and Olivia is hilarious. But the longer I read, the more annoyed at Olivia I got. Olivia acts like a spoiled brat and doesn’t act like an adult at all and just listen to Colin. She always thinks the worst of him, and doesn’t even try to think about things from his side or listen to his explanations at all. With everything Colin has going for him, if he was my friend I would tell him not to be with Olivia, and that he could do so much better. The author tries to play this off as just part of Olivia’s quirky, never thinking personality, but it just comes off as immature.

Olivia is known for leaving a trail of messes in her wake, so no one is particularly surprised when her apartment block goes up in flames - as does her seemingly perfect relationship. Thankfully, her brother gives her a temporary place to stay. But the downside is living with Colin, her brother’s best friend and thorn in Olivia’s side since they were kids. The bright spot in Olivia’s life as she scrambles to sort herself out is a wrong-number text from a mysterious man who seems content to continue flirting with her. But what she doesn’t realise is that Mr Wrong Number is none other than Colin - who has worked it out and is distressed to find he’s increasingly attracted to his best friend’s sister.

This was really fun. Olivia was a really entertaining narrator - she was very amusing and the parts from her point of view worked really well. I liked Colin, as well. I really liked their dynamic and that this wasn’t a mutual pining situation as it was fun to see how they both developed deeper feelings. The situation with the wrong-number texts was a nice addition to this kind of story. The romance was good - they had good chemistry both when they were interacting in-person and through text messages, there was quite a lot of sexual tension and I think that part of the book was very strong. I also thought the conflict between the two of them was well-done and believable, although I felt it resolved a little quickly.

On a similar note, I did find the pacing a little off. The first half left me really doubting how they would actually start to develop deeper feelings; it felt like they spent a lot of that first half not necessarily hating the other, but feeling neutral. It meant the developments in the second half felt a little hurried to me.

I also had a gripe with how Olivia’s ‘messiness’ was treated. Whilst she was a really fun character, I felt so bad for her at certain points because I felt her family was unnecessarily harsh and mean about her, very often to her face. This is often played for laughs, but as the story went on, I really wanted her family to acknowledge they weren’t always fair to her. The novel touched on it a bit with Colin’s revelation partway through about why she tackles life the way she does, but I would have liked a scene where he called her family out for judging her so harshly and for making jibes about her.

Overall, though, I thought this was quite a solid romance novel. It’s a very strong take on the tropes within it and the romance, once it got going, was quite sweet and developed nicely, and as a whole it was an easy read.

Content Notes: Brother’s best friend / best friend’s sister, roommates, hate-to-love, forced proximity, hidden/mistaken identity.
