This book was frustrating, dense, bleak, and aloof. It was also darkly funny, astute, and creatively brilliant.

I struggled with the first two thirds of this book, which felt like a protracted setting up of the world, characters, and backstory. I found the text impenetrable, the pace frenetic, and the storyline uneven. The second-person perspective placed me at a distance from the text, and this was made doubly alienating by what an unpleasant character the protagonist is. This perspective also made it harder for me to engage with the unfamiliar concepts and language used in the book, as I felt like my brain was already exhausted from filtering the meaning through a perspective filter.

This changed when I got to the final third of the book. I'm not sure if it just took me that long to get into the rhythm of it, or if the pacing and action substantially changed, but all of the elements came together for me and propelled me towards the conclusion. Was the last third of the book satisfying enough to make up for how much I struggled with the beginning? On balance? Just.

Other themes/aspects that came up for me when I read it:

- ethics of conflict photojournalism 
- war and power
- mortality/the afterlife
- homophobia (both homosexuality and homophobia are portrayed pretty negatively in the book and the author also appears to be straight. For me this makes it a homophobic commentary on homophobia?)
- female characters (they are... Not well written)

I ended up liking this book much more than my initial expectations. 
I quite enjoyed the writing style and the elements of magical realism. The narrative was challenging and even brutal at times, but very much captivating.

I have to admit that I generally struggle with unlikeable characters (especially if they are the main characters) but this is a rare case in which I actually appreciated all of these flawed and at times even unpleasant people, they felt very real and well-rounded in their portrayal.

I also liked that the story is deeply grounded in Sri Lankan history but the narration is not weighed down with long-winded explanatory paragraphs (which I really do not like in fiction as they stand out too much and interrupt the narrative flow), the reader has to pick up pieces of historical information as the narration progresses and/or do further reasearch by themself.

I also want to mention that the final revelation of Maali's fate left me completely stunned, I was speechless, floored, I still cannot believe it, it was truly a plot twist that I did not see coming and it landed like a punch to the stomach. 

Some episodes/sections left me a bit perplexed 

like a section discussing penises, okay I guess?!

or didn't impress me as much as the rest of the story, therefore the 4.5 rating. It is still a book well worthy of your time and that offers a lot to chew on.

Because, on reflection, once you have seen your own face and recognized the color of your eyes, tasted the air and smelled the soil, drunk from the purest fountains and the dirtiest wells, that is the kindest thing you can say abut life. It's not nothing.

As I was entering my review, I noticed that I nearly ticked all the ‘moods’ suggested by this platform. And I think that’s a good way of describing how I felt about this book and what I think made it so special - it was about life on such an immense scale, exploring topics like the meaning of life and death, while at the same time, it was just a story of a young man coming to terms with his own life and death. Everything about this book was about balance, of stories of war and love, life and death, pain and happiness, friendship and rejection. I really could go on. My favourite aspect of this book was definitively its unique second person narrating voice which ive never encountered before I felt was so fitting for the “in between” world in which this book is situated. I also recognised the slow but steady character development and story progression - although I found the story slightly too short for my liking. I especially liked the way the book was structured around the seven moons, which potentially contributed to the sense of slowness of the storyline due to its structure and predictability, but I felt reassured by it and less rushed.

I am a little bit embarrassed to admit how much I liked the ending though. I read the story in fear of his decision, constantly reflecting on what I would do and finding myself to relate to the character in the way he felt so torn between the good and the evil, between letting go and seeking revenge. I loved how the author kept it until the very last minute to decide, and as embarrassing as it sounds, it somehow restored some sense of faith for the world and life after death.

This was a very mixed reading experience for me, everything regarding the conflict happening in Sri Lanka at the time this book is set is incredibly interesting, and the writing style was vibrant, lush with details, with lots of poetic musing on life and death. Though I think the writing style and crammed plot made the overall pacing of the novel very slow. The story would flip-flop from interesting dialogues and history to plot points and characters (like Sena) that are connected to the overarching story but don’t provide enough substance to be actually interesting or engaging. I can’t stand slow pacing so that really cut my enjoyment of this book in half but overall the story, characters, and reflections within this novel are definitely worth the read.

This book was a wild bloody violent funny and ridiculous ride. Being set during the Sri Lankan revolution and having it be a revenge plot about what it truly means to be human and to be alive and who we affect is going to be a story that sticks me for a very long time.
