A student recommended this book and I can see why he liked it. Adventure and risk taking, smart and sensitive even if he is a trouble maker; whom am I discribing my student or the main character, probably both.

I would have given this novel a five. It is packed full of intrigue and adventure BUT the language was not at all appropriate for a kids book. Ass, damn, Jesus Christ, bastard, smoking and a marijuana reference. Frankly, it seemed unnecessary and included just for “cool points” or shock value. Luckily I was reading this to my boys so I was able to edit as I read. We have read “Poached,” the second book in this series and it seemed to be a bit better in this department.

This book was cool. It really was a mystery, and I didn't know who it was who murdered Henry until it was revealed. It wasn't bad for a first book written by that author. I really liked it.

Two of my boys have loved this series, so I decided to check it out over break. What a delightful mystery!

They had to swim in hippo poop. (That's gross; I'm glad I didn't do it.)
I really love this mystery, and the twists.

Read this on the recommendation of a 6th grader whose quirky sense of humor I enjoy. It did not disappoint. The plot and writing reminded me a bit of Louis Sachar -- not as masterful or quite as wacky, but with a likeable protagonist and weirdly enjoyable plot. Certainly something I'd recommend to middle grade kids.

This was the author’s first book, and I can tell that he did some research into zoos and animals. This book was super interesting, and I’m interested to find out how other books in the series will play out
