I loved Lois Lowry's The Giver growing up. It is one of the books I have reread over ten times easily. I never got around to reading Gathering Blue while I was growing up and I found a copy this summer at the local thrift store. As soon as I started reading I remembered why I loved this author so much. Her writing style is fantastic. However as I was reading through I longed for something more detailed than a YA novel.
*spoilers* If the beasts are not real, then what did take the people from the fields? What are the noises they hear at night? And while I liked what the clanking sound was, I thought that the climax was very weak for such a build up. I feel if this novel was not aimed at a young adult audience it could have gone into further detail. I liked the potential Jonas reference.
*end of spoilers*
Overall I really enjoyed this novel and would recommend it for Lois Lowry fans and YA readers.

Enjoyed the book but I think Lowry has issues with the ending of books.

Easy read. This book deserves more attention than it's been given. Excited to read the rest of the series.

Really great follow up to "The Giver".  It is in the same series, but could be read as a stand alone book, as it doesn’t follow the same characters as the first book.

A great story, though a tiny bit predictable at times. I enjoyed Kira's character and, of course, mischievous Matt. On to book 3 in 'The Giver' series.

I feel like the ambiguous ending was a stretch to far considering the violence. It made sense for Jonas to run, but it doesnt make sense for Kira to stay. She has a lot of hope to change her people but it's kind of clear these arent reasonable people.

Loved the nod that Jonas is in the healing village. I thought the world building was fun and imaginative, a stark contrast to what The Giver was all about. I'm excited to keep reading, in hope I get me some answers

This is the second book in The Giver series. It didn’t intrigue me as much as the first, but I am assuming this is only a piece to a puzzle that will become clear in the very last book. The characters are new and unique, and their social norms make you ponder how easily people are manipulated by the blind acceptance of old traditions.
