Honestly, this didn't really do anything for me. It was disturbing, yes, but not enough plot or character development to make me fully invested in being disturbed or caring about what was going on. When people died, I didn't really know who they were so I didn't really feel the impact that I thought I was supposed to. I'm sure that there are people who will enjoy this, but it wasn't me!

The series suffers from a lot of the pitfalls of serialized manga (chapters often repeat the same basic beats, new enemies are constantly introduced and then hastily defeated, a million tiny plot holes and details get forgotten), but it’s still a really fun read that kept me hooked enough to finish in one sitting. You can tell that Umezu was a big influence on artists like Junji Ito, and his vast, unending post-apocalyptic desert never stop being eerie to look at, more like a thick, black ocean than sand. Worth reading despite its flaws.
