It’s an easy to read book that is interesting enough - but not enough to own a copy. I’d happily read the following books in the series through a library, but I’m not going to specifically seek them out.

Somehow they managed to make an interesting premise into a boring and repetitive story that's sprinkled with blatant misogyny, a racist caricature of a villain and way too many "adults graphically murdering/mutilating toddlers for absolutely no reason but shock value" scenes. I know the 1970s were a different era yaddi-yadda, but this is excessively bad. There was exactly one genuinely interesting part, which is apparently expanded upon later on in the series

, but the rest is so bad it's just not worth it.

Tldr: By far the worst manga I've ever read.

I knew what this series was about, but I didn't expect it to hit the ground running quite as hard as it does. Fantastic visuals, the art here is really incredible. Brutal though, so tread lightly if this is a sensitive spot for you--this is a perilous journey for these kids, and I don't think it's going to get easier.
