*SPOILER*
Interesting to read this right after John Scalzi's Fuzzy Nation which is based on this. The differing elements that they used to prove sapience, the difference in the way they present Jack Holloway - one as having a conscious the other as being the right guy because he is driven by self interest.

A quick, enjoyable read. It's surprising that I'd not heard of this book until John Scalzi talked about it - he's written an new book in Piper's Fuzzy universe.
The characters are great, if not as innocent as the Fuzzies themselves: a race of semi-sentient affectionate natives on a planet rich in resources that a hungry human population craves. The good guys and bad guys are easily delineated and don't cross boundaries; which, for me, is one of the biggest knocks against classic sci-fi. However, that separation works well in this book. I consumed it rapidly and didn't pause to analyze it until I was finished.

This public domain sci fi novel is great for younger readers. I would have loved it if I read it as a preteen. Now, maybe I'll come back to it if I have time. The Fuzzies are just so delightful.

Jack Holloway, an aged loner who is an sunstone prospector on a frontier planet, has a being he names Little Fuzzy, see book cover, stumble into his life. Halloway takes them under his protection and learns the true value of having a family and being with others. However, the planetary corporation has a vested interest in assuring that the little fuzzies are never made known to others. Thus begins the trial to determine whether or not the little fuzzies are sapient or not. What great fun this was.

The central theme of the book is interesting: What is the dividing line between sapient beings (like humans) and other, even highly intelligent creatures (like primates). There is a good bit of legal battle and courtroom drama to go along with the suspense and adventure of getting to know a new, intelligent species. As others reviewers have stated, the human characters are a bit too flat and forgettable, while the new species (the fuzzies) are too-cute. Some day, maybe I'll read the reboot [b:Fuzzy Nation|9647532|Fuzzy Nation (Fuzzy Sapiens, #7)|John Scalzi|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1316132345l/9647532._SX50_.jpg|18280046] by [a:John Scalzi|4763|John Scalzi|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1562613145p2/4763.jpg] to see how these deficiencies are dealt with. Overall, I give this book 3.5 stars rounding down.
