First half of the book was great but it set up for this suspense and mystery that just never happened. Then the second half was too preachy on too many topics (global warming, politics, over population, etc) but didn’t go anywhere with any of them.

Don’t listen to the people upset about politics in the book.
Don’t want politics in your book about a Latina women who grew up in a white dominated country small town? Don’t fucking read it. Characters have nuances and politics reflect on peoples lives. And the whole point of that scene was to show the one time she broke in front of him and how he handled it.
ANYWAY-
Loved this book. I cried a lot but felt like I got the biggest hug in the end. It’s very emotionally heavy and I think it beautifully captured this lack of trust and that survival instincts that come with c-ptsd and BPD. I loved slowly learning her story, and feeling ways that I related (and ways I didn’t) to her up bringing. It was a powerful read for he with well developed characters and beautiful descriptions. Most importantly, it’s about learning to move on and to live again - to stop living in survival mode off of stress and guilt and just live on.

I chose this book as one of Amazon’s First Reads. I was actually in the middle of another book when I started a few pages and switched to it.
This is about a woman who comes from poverty and has had a tough childhood. She persevered but never really feels comfortable. She falls in love and marries a rich husband, and still doesn’t feel confident. Then her mom dies and she goes back to West Virginia.
It has flowery prose and realistic characters. I V really enjoyed it and recommend it.

I loved the writing, and how beautifully the story flowed through time as Bel told her past. I was intrigued through the first three-quarters of the book.
However, the last quarter of the story just lost me a bit. Not to say they weren't important topics, but there was a LOT of themes jammed into the last part of this book. It felt rushed and some felt out of nowhere. Maybe I didn't read it carefully enough, but I was a bit caught off guard.
Even so, I would read more by this author.
