A good read but, for me, I would have liked to have known why the lottery even exists to understand it better.

Before there was this:

There was this:

A village, and a very important lottery that takes place there. It's not one in which you'll win any money, cars, or prizes. It's not one that if you win, you'll run home and brag to your friends. It's one where you beg for your life, then lose it in a shower of stones.

Hunger games ain't got nothing on this.

so short but so good ... a story about a lottery that serves as a way to pick a person to be sacrificed in order for the next year to go well. as always, the writing is perfect. it's shirley jackson, of course i loved it. the commentary is also great and she makes good points about herd mentality and tradition.
