I started off struggling with this; I admit to being a bit of a sweary person, but the first few chapters felt like they were out to shock. Crassness and swearing for crassness and swearing’s sake. However, the story took over and it was more than I could have hoped for. Thought-provoking, heart-wrenching, dystopian yet scarily realistic. I adored the characters, even though I wanted to shake the protagonist at many points throughout the story. The unveiling of his back story, and that of Lineker (sweary dog) was so sad, and really well-written. I would definitely try something else written by this author.

I loved it. The dog was pivotal to my enjoyment, but the writing style was superb. I think audio was the best form for it.

If you are an author and want a five star review from me, the easiest path is to write a book that includes the dogs perspective. If you make that dog have a bit of an attitude your five star chances go up even higher. The first chapter of this book had me. Admittedly it did drop off a bit in the third quarter but in the end the rules win out and this gets 5. Well written. Great relationships between all the characters. Just an enjoyable read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story and listened to it on audible over a short holiday break. It's always endearing, I think, to have a dog narrate all or part of a story. In this case, the dog, Lineker (named after Gary Lineker), is hilarious. His chapters are a joy even when it's a more serious or violent part of the book. His observations are entertaining and I will forever think of dogs having cockney accents now.

Overall, I was warned that the book was depressing but hey - it has a happy ending and that's all I'll say. Definitely give this one a read. I'm now a fan of Adrian Walker's work.
