Some very weird things happen in this book, and some of them were not pleasant to read, but still I think the themes were executed well and the writing was gorgeous, so Into the Forest gets four stars while I'm sorting out all my thoughts about it

Every have a bad day and feel like it comes in a huge wave where everything falls apart? This book is one bad thing after another. Two sisters are alone together after the world slowly falls apart. They are better off than most though since they are secluded and have a lot of resources nearby. I hated this book…I gave it four stars though. I was going through my own set of misery after misery and unlike the cliché, my misery does not like company. If I read this in a better state of mind I know I would have loved it. It touched on almost every major crisis a person can experience.

Interesting and claustrophobic. -2 for implausible character actions and development, and -1 for unnecessary incest. I didn't particularly like Nell or Eva, they both come across as self centered caricatures. I'm bummed because this is one of the most realistic apocalypses I've read about, but the characters feel so two dimensional that it ruined it for me.

This was exactly the apocalyptic story I like. All the comforts of modern life are gone and the characters must find a way to use what is left and what nature gives them to survive. They battle the elements, wildlife, crappy humans and themselves and still survive.

It was excellent in that regard.

Then suddenly, in the middle, for a paragraph or two was this weird sister incest thing that was, I feel, unneeded. It didn't ruin the story because it really was only a paragraph, maybe two. Short ones at that. But it just seemed very weird. And then it was never mentioned again, never done again....weird.
