fantasy mystery. Evil superheroes.

I really enjoyed this book. I liked that I couldn’t really tell who the villain was. It felt like every character was morally grey.

Fantastic! Very dark take on the superhero trope.
I wasn’t sure at first, the 2 main characters were not likeable from the off which made me uncertain.  I would have liked a bit more history of their friendship to get me more invested more quickly, and to really feel the change in that relationship. But it does fall into place later on and makes sense.
Not sure what the deal with the self help books and Victor’s parents was- to highlight why he was the way he was? That didn’t feel clear to me and I don’t think it would have been missed if left out.

Look, if dark morally grey complex characters are your thing, you’ll love this book. I feel like it just wasn’t for me, I need someone or something to root for and this book didn’t have that. You don’t know who’s side you’re on and you don’t know enough to try. I liked it enough to finish it because I wanted to know what happened but I’m really debating not even picking up the next. I’m not itching to continue this story I’m afraid.

Very aptly named book. Worldbuilding requires some suspension of disbelief but the focus of the book is really on the relationships of the characters. Lots of good, complicated feelings and emotions. Every character was interesting and varied. A couple were even likeable. I found the ending very satisfying and I'm eager to read the sequel.
