Really loved this book. It was so well written and the world building was fantastic. Really enjoyed the different POVs, and how distinguishable they were. Excited to continue on with the series

A lesser YA version of LOTR

This book is in the same vein of LOTR, Shannara Chronicles, and The Wheel of Time. While very good, not quite the same calibur of writing.

Chosen one with magical properties
Ragtag band of misfit companions
Old wizened mentor
Immortal one
Quest to save the world/realm
Dark Lord
Dark Lord's conduit
Dark Lord's minions
Monsters

The storyline was basically a build up and establishing plot, intro to characters, world building, and a very long walk. To be fair, The Fellowship of the Ring is the same, only more magnificent. If this is your kind of story, don't hesitate to dive in!

Content contains violence and profanity.

I ate this up like candy corn the day after halloween. The worldbuilding was immaculate. The smells and colors and attitudes of each culture and character were fabulous and I had an absolute giddy nerdy time finding all the nods to LOTR. I found myself constantly theorizing and making notes of potential foreshadowing and - literally - Erida is such a baddy. And why am I kind of rooting for the villains as much as our band of heroes? Diving into book two like a horse in a desert oasis.

I loved the idea of this book, and I did enjoy it for the most part. However, there are just too many POVs for me. Just as I was really getting into one character’s storyline and POV it would change. Normally I don’t mind multiple POVs if it’s only 2 or 3 maybe even 4 but this was around 5 or 6 I believe, and it made the story drag. All of that said, I am looking forward to the next book, and I am hopeful that will be a little less underwhelming.

It was too slow a build and I couldn’t get into the characters - I got bored tbh
