I didn’t take the reviews seriously enough when they called this book heartbreaking.
It felt like my soul was being crunched up like gravel as the ending drew closer.

This was such a frustrating read. And it’s done on purpose to make you feel frustrated and helpless because it’s just so enraging that no one seems to care that this child has just vanished.

The way the story is told by changing between past and present was a nice touch, made more so once the big reveal happened.

You think it's bad and then it's just worse.
SpoilerI think I really had to just brush over the cooler thing or I would've drowned in it. Good lord how sad, it's horrible.

dark sad

This is likely going to get 5 stars from me eventually, but it was one of the most disturbing books I’ve ever read (and I read a lot of horror), so I just feel like I need to sit and digest it for a while. It was brilliantly written. The unique format really drove home the emotion.

Edit: I don’t see a content warning option for this, but if you struggle with feelings of unreality or helplessness or gaslighting, this is going to be a rough read. It was a rough read for me.

Some books are meant to haunt you. Tiffany D Jackson is one of the writers who accomplishes that every time I read her books. Even when you think you know what’s going on, she always throw’s something in I never expected. This was an incredibly dark story told through the innocent eyes of a young girl who will stop at nothing to find her missing best friend - even if no one else believes she’s missing. Not for the faint of heart, I recommend checking trigger warnings before reading this one.

For all the missing children, and for all the children who aren't believed, this story sings to the vulnerability and easy dismissal of children and their experiences that the adults just fail.

Wow was that depressing. I cried which I wasn’t really expecting, but I really got to know the characters and felt for them. I do have to say I thought it was weird how it was written and how Claudia was written, but it makes sense when a certain reveal happens. This is such an important story, but very dark. I also really like Claudia as a main character and how strong she was. I really enjoyed the friendships and the family and how great of support system Claudia had. I do have to say it was also kind of confusing how it was written because I kept forgetting what timeline we were in.
