I’m really beginning to like this author. The chemistry between the MMC and the FMC is amazing. There was a part in the middle that got a bit frustrating because you knew it was going to be resolved but you have to wait for the characters to catch up. I was not prepared for the ending. Non-Spoiler/Spoiler: I have always wondered if a book could make me cry since it hasn’t happened before… now I know! Beautiful story, a little heavy on the introspection, but still an amazing read.

Oh, my word. I can’t remember the last time I read a new book that made me cry this hard. I was literally shaking while my husband snored beside me. I saw the ending coming well before it did (it seemed like it caught a lot of people off guard). I thought I’d be okay, but I wasn’t.

The tragedy is gratuitous and bordering on unrealistic. Ella’s lost both parents, a close grandparent, and her brother. Her husband abounded her and her children. One child gets cancer. And the other? It’s too much. I don’t think we needed all of it.

I also found the writing cheesy/corny a few times. It’s difficult to remember after such a tragic ending, but I did go 🥴 a few times.

All that to say, this was a moving story and held a lot of depth. I’m sure I’ll be thinking about it as I move onto other books. I’ve read Fourth Wing and Iron Flame, but this was my first contemporary from Yarros and what a doozy it was. She always manages to kill me with her endings.

this book had me EMOTIONAL. the first 40 pages, i was crying. the last 40 pages, i was SOBBING, like getting the pages wet from my tears.
if i'm being so for real though, aside from the heartbreaking tragedy, i found the love story itself to be…not that interesting? it was giving insta-love which isn’t one of my favorite tropes. maybe i didn’t relate to ella or beckett but they were just kinda boring and maybe a little cringey.
the familial relationships and found family moments were 5/5, but the love story was like 2/5, hence my rating.
if you want a book to make you cry, i recommend. if you want a compelling romance, i’d suggest something else.

This was probably one of the most emotional books I’ve ever read. It absolutely gutted me. I should have known it was going to rip my heart out when I got through the first 38 pages. It’s such an emotional story. But so good.
