I went into this with thoughts of M Night Shyamalan's "The Village" and Carrie Ryan's "The Forests of Hands and Teeth", both of which I really love (Forest of Hands and Teeth SO MUCH LOVE). Unfortunately I found myself struggling to feel engaged. Emmeline was one of those heroes that everybody loves even though there are all these multitude of reasons not to love her. The village's leader is in love with her, even though she's 12 years his junior and "Stained", and it just felt like one of those "oh woe is me, I'm so pretty" kind of plot lines. Because of course there's the other boy who loves her, too.

I don't know. I finished the book because I wanted to know what happened, but it wasn't the fast paced read that James Dashner promised it to be on the back cover. The romance was hard to care about, and the characters speech was a little off. I couldn't tell if it was supposed to be that way or not. It felt like half the time, the characters spoke in this old-timey kind of accent, and the other half they spoke normally.

I found the premise pretty interesting and I enjoyed the writing style. This book kept me on the edge of my seat enough that I finished it within a day and never felt like it was dragging on for too long.

With that being said, I did find the relationship between Emmeline (mc) and Kane (her love interest) a bit meh at some points, especially at the beginning. The first couple of times she saw him from afar were always a bit cringeworthy to me. Every single time she just stared at him (and couldn't find any self-control to look away!) and thought about how much of a hunk he was. Their relationship did grow on me a little, but not much. They spent some time together and were suddenly professing their love to one another. The love-at-first-sight trope was whatever. Their relationship wasn't by any means terrible, but it could have been so much more, ya know?

The ending (especially how everything went down w/ Brother Stockham) also felt incredibly unsatisfying and essentially ruined the story for me (quite a mood dampener, I must say). I was definitely looking forward to everything coming to a head and I thought the buildup of action looked promising, but then it ended and was resolved so quickly that I was left feeling super disappointed.

All in all, it wasn't bad per se, but the ending was definitely its greatest downfall. If it hadn't been for that, I would have enjoyed it so much more. I'm not sure if I'll continue w/ the series.

To start off, much of the book takes place in the lead up to winter. In fact, I'm pretty sure we didn't see a single snowflake during the whole book. It was mostly people in the town talking about the scary winter storm that loomed ahead, so they had to get all their stuff done before then. But seasonal confusion aside, it started off pretty interesting. There was a good cast of characters I was looking forward to getting to know, and there seemed to be so much suspense and sadness surrounding Em's desire to explore and her fear to venture too far out. But then I reached about 45 pages in and immediately. the. book. slowed. almost. to. a. stop. Grinding halt. -
