This is a superb as ever, telling a very human story that has been lost to the popular culture version, something that is rather ironic given that the morale of the story is about not making assumptions on first impressions and that there is always a deeper reason that drives behaviour. Shelley captures the humanity and torment of both Frankenstein and his creation as they grow and change in response to live events and to each other, whirling deeper and deeper into a chilling stalemate with no clear way out. Utterly engrossing and even more chilling in current circumstances.

This story is written with such conviction and eloquence that you quickly become fully engrossed in the 'monster's' battle for survival and Frankenstein's feeling of responsibility and love for what he has created. The story shows how first appearance affect how you are perceived and this is emphasised by the many film adaptations which show the monster as a big green bolt ridden unfeeling beast and Frankenstein as the crazed, power mad scientist when in reality the monster is made to be the way he is through ill-feeling, fear and hatred and Frankenstein is much more of a fatherly figure than he's ever portrayed to be.

This story has huge relevence today, probably more so than when it was first published with more and more emphasise being placed on appearance and first impressions and looking 'right' than ever before, especially with the advent of the digital and internet age. Even though many of us like to believe that we are open minded and don't judge others on their appearance this book makes you reflect and realise that you really are just as bad as the next person, whether you like it or not.
